How A Lighter Works
Structure
The fuel used in lighters is mainly flammable gas. Early use of kerosene, because of odor, is now rarely used. Butane, propane and liquefied petroleum gas are commonly used. They are pressurized and filled into a closed air box, and once released into the air, they absorb heat and vaporize and expand rapidly, which is easy to ignite. The butane used in lighters (CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3) is normal butane, which is a general term for two alkane hydrocarbons that have the same molecular formula (C4H10). These include: n-butane and isobutane (2-methylpropane). Butane is a flammable, colorless, and easily liquefied gas. It is an important raw material for the development of petrochemical and organic raw materials, and its use has been paid more and more attention.
Property
Colorless flammable gas. Melting point -135.35°C, boiling point -0.5°C, relative density 0.5730(25°C), refractive index 1.3326(20°C), critical temperature 1520°C, critical pressure 380kPa, critical volume 4387ml/g. Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform and other hydrocarbons. The explosive mixture is formed with air, and the explosion limit is 19%~84%(V/V).
